Overview

Climbing Mount Kenya is a fitness activity .

The Chogoria route is arguably the most magnificent ascent route to the summit area. The walk up beside the Gorges is truly spectacular. This trek gives a justifiably magnificent tour, offering ever new views of the summits, glaciers and tarns with their unique high altitude vegetation. The descent by the Sirimon route gives one an opportunity to walk down the Mackinders valley that is ever surprising.  Overall this trip gives you more than you bargained for.

ITINERARY

Day 1 Nairobi- Mt Kenya Bandas

Depart from Nairobi or Nanyuki at 0800hrs, driving through agricultural country up to Chogoria town for lunch. After lunch, we take 4×4 and drive up to the edge of the bamboo forest where we start our trekking through the dense bamboo forest for up to the Mt Kenya Bandas.

From here we have a very good view of the summit point (Lenana) to the horizons. Dinner and overnight at the Mount Kenya Bandas.

Day  2 Mt Kenya Bandas – Lake Ellis Campsite

After breakfast and sorting of porter loads we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithanguni and the Giants Billiards Table

You get to the camp just in time for hot lunch and then an afternoon hike can be done to Mugi hill for acclimatization. The hike takes 1-2 hours. Fishing in the lake is another optional activity. Dinner and overnight in the camp.

Day 3 Lake Ellis Camp Lake Michaelson Camp

This day offers a wonderful range of vision. Today you start the hike of the steep slope towards Lake Michaelson. With water rests on the way the trek is one to remember. The highlight of the days trek is the walk from the cliff down to the Lake Michaelson in slow and calculated steps. Arrival time is just in time for hot lunch. Lake Michaelson has arguably the most scenic views on the mountain with Vivien falls and the Nithi gorges. Overnight at Lake Michaelson Camp

Day 4 Simba Col Camp

Depart the camp after breakfast and continue the ascent to Simba Col arriving in time for lunch. Unique high altitude fauna as the rock hyrax can be seen in this area. After lunch, there is time for acclimatization walks to Tooth peaks and Delamere peak in preparation for the summit ascent later. (4,400 m / 14,435 ft). Overnight at Simba Col Camp

Day 5 Summit then down to Old Moses camp

At 3:30 am you are woken up by the camp crew and have some tea and biscuits. Start the attempt of the scree and rock to the summit, Point Lenana (4,985 m / 16,355 ft), which is the highlight of our trip! After taking photos of the African sunrise and on a clear day views of Kilimanjaro, you descend slowly down to Shipton’s Camp for breakfast. After some rest embark on the journey to Old Moses camp through Mackinder’s valley arriving late in the evening. Lunch is served on the way. The camp is relatively warm and here you enjoy the view of Nanyuki town and the Timau plains. Dinner and overnight

 

Day  6 Old Moses camp – Nairobi

After early morning breakfast, descend for 3 hours up to the Sirimon Park gate to catch a vehicle for transfer to Nairobi or your next destination. At the park entrance gate you have the opportunity to bid goodbye to the crew as you appreciate them depending on their services rendered.
