DAY1: ACCRA

Arrival and pick up to your hotel in Accra.  A brief discussion of Itinerary after check-in if convenient.

DAY2: ACCRA CITY TOUR

Your first full day in Ghana, after a sumptuous breakfast at your hotel, we set off for the tour of Accra and vicinity, passing through the economic and administrative districts.

VISIT MAKORLA MARKET and experience open negotiation mostly done by women in the biggest market in the heart of the capital.

•INDEPENDENCE SQUARE where you will see the enclosed flame of African liberation, which was lit by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1961.

NKRUMAH MEMORIAL PARK, final resting place of Ghana’s first president. Set in attractive gardens, there is an adjoining museum, which contains photos, artifacts, and insight into Dr. Nkrumah’s life. Adjoining the park is the National cultural center, which is Ghana’s largest outdoor arts and crafts market selling traditional crafts from all over West Africa.

JAMES TOWN—one of Accra’s most historic neighborhoods, where history resides on every corner. Best known for its lighthouses (the first of which was constructed in 1875 by the British) as a navigational aid for trading vessels sailing through the Gulf of Guinea. The original structure was ruined but a larger and more improved lighthouse completed in 1921 is still functioning today.

• You may visit “Brazil House” and learn about the seven Afro-Brazilians families who returned to settle in Ghana in 1836. Familiar Brazilian/Portuguese last names such as De Souza, Palmares, Azumah, Amorin, Da Costa, Santos, De Medeiros, and Olympio are abundant in this section of Accra.

. ACCRA ART CENTER – the biggest art, craft, and souvenir market in Accra provide you with a variety of wood carvings, colorful Ghanaian beads, and kente cloths, ready-made African and Ghanaian dresses, and footwear, adinkra symbols souvenirs, and many other interesting items and gift shops.

 ART COFFIN MAKING. We will visit a local casket making shop to see a collection of caskets carved in the shape of different objects, depicting traditional beliefs in life after death. The “Fantasy Coffins” of Teshie Nungua has been featured in National Geographic and can be found in museums and galleries worldwide.

 

 

DAY3: ACCRA - ELMINA

After an early morning breakfast trip to the following places and journey to the ancient capital of Ghana.

SHAI - HILLS RESERVE. visit Shai Hills reserve for game viewing by driving through the reserve for about 5km to view various animals including antelopes, bushbucks, baboons, other animals, and several bird species. You will have the opportunity to learn about the various artifacts found in the reserve, which is the homeland of the Krobo ethnic group. Optionally, You may also visit the caves, which is of historic importance to the Krobos and other tribes. There are three caves in all and depending on your energy you may visit all.

POSUBAN SHRINE. Continue to Cape Coast. Stop at Mankesim where you will visit the Posuban shrine to learn about  Mankessim people and their rich religious heritage.


DAY4:  ELMINA - CAPE COAST - ELMINA

KAKUM PARK  After breakfast, visit Kakum National Park. Kakum is one of Ghana’s most famous parks. Take a brief walking tour on the forest floor; see birds, butterflies and perhaps catch a glimpse of the forests over 40 species of mammals including monkeys and the reclusive forest elephant. Proceed to the canopy walk. Kakum is home to Africa’s only aerial walkway through the tree canopy, a 1000-foot-long and seven-bridge walkway with viewing platforms that reach heights of over 150 feet above the ground.

ELMINA CASTLE. Return to Elmina and visit Elmina Castle. arrive in Elmina and visit the Elmina Castle built by the Portuguese in 1482 and is also known as St. George's Castle. This castle was the first European structure built in Sub-Saharan Africa. The colorful harbor nestled below the Elmina Castle, full of pirogues preparing to go to the sea offers one of West Africa's greatest photo opportunities.

End the day at the beautiful beach along with the seat and relax.

DAY5: ELMINA – ASIN MANSO – ASHANTI TRADITIONAL BUILDINGS- KUMASI

FISH HARBOR. Do early morning fishing with local people at Elmina and drive to assin Manso slave trail, the burial site of two former slaves from the U.S. and Jamaica whose remains were re-interred in August 1998 during Ghana’s first Emancipation Day celebration. You will see the ‘Slave River’ where captured Africans were washed before being confined in the Slave Castles to await shipment to the Americas and the Caribbean. (Optional)

ASANTI TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE. Make a stop at Patakro near Obuasi to visit the Ashanti traditional building, a UNESCO heritage site.

Currently, only ten of them are left. They are the only surviving examples of traditional Ashanti architecture.

MANHYIA PALACE. Arrive late afternoon and visit Manhyia Palace, official residence of Ashanti Kings (Asantehene) until 1974, now a museum containing treasured items relating to the Ashanti Kingdom.

DAY 6: KUMASI

Enjoy a drive through the city of Kumasi with monuments dedicated to the memory of the great Ashanti people.

BONWIRE KENTE WEAVING TEMPLE. Visit 3 craft villages of Ahwiaa, Ntonso, and Bonwire.

After breakfast, you will visit the 3 craft villages of the surrounding lush countryside of Kumasi.

. Bonwire will be our first craft village where we’ll see how the famous Kente cloth is handmade on looms in a time-honored tradition passed down through generations. See the Kente styles and the opportunity to make purchases.

Optional: We may pay a courtesy call to the paramount chief of this community.

NTONSO ADINKRA VILLAGE. We will continue to the village of Ntonso where Artisans hand-stamp patterns on a cotton cloth to make Adinkra textiles. Black-on-Black and Black-on-Red Adinkra Cloth is worn for funerals and other solemn occasions; learn how the Black Dye is made in the village from the bark of trees and creates your own Adinkra sash to take home. You may also purchase large pieces of the Adinkra Cloth handmade in the village.

WOOD CARVING. We proceed to the woodcarving Village of Ahwiaa, known for the talented craftsmen who fashion royal stools, walking sticks, and Fertility Dolls from wood; with the opportunity to purchase hand-carved items of all kinds.

CENTRE FOR NATIONAL CULTURE. End the day  visit the National Cultural Center, which features the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and various studios of the brass makers, potters

DAY7: KUMASI - KINTAMPO -BUABEN FIEMA -  KUMASI

KINTAMPO WATERFALL. After breakfast, embark on a drive further north to Kintampo. visit Kintampo Falls to experience the cool invigorating atmosphere created by nature. Savor the breathtaking view of the cascading waterfall.

-BOABEN FIEMA MONKEYS. Depart Kintampo and drive south to Kumasi.

west to Buaben Fiema. Enjoy The company of friendly monkey. Feed them bananas and peanuts and become their friends. Drive back to Kumasi

 

DAY8: KUMASI – KOFORIDUA

KEJETIA MARKET. After breakfast, visit the Kumasi Central Market (also known as the Kejetia Market), the largest open market in West Africa, where more than 10,000 vendors sell their wares. Here you will find just about everything, food, fabric, beauty products, and handmade crafts, etc, and continue to koforidua.

UMBRELLA ROCK. The amazing umbrella rock which sites around a forest where the Boti Falls is located. The uniform shape of the rock is beautiful and the story behind it will blow your mind. Its sizes are well okay to shelter up to about 12 to 15 people at a time

COCOA FARM Continue to Tetteh Quarshie’s Cocoa farm the first cocoa farm in Ghana and the Mampong Herbal Institute.

Drive to Akosombo for an overnight stay.

 

DAY9: AKOSOMBO -SOGAKOPE - ADA

AKOSOMBO DAM. After breakfast in the morning enjoy the scenic view of the Volta lake and Akosombo Dam. Continue with a picturesque drive to the cradle of hydroelectricity in Ghana, the famous Akosombo Hydro-electric Dam which is located within the Akosombo gorge, on the Volta River. The construction of the dam resulted in the flooding of the Volta River Basin which resulted in the creation of Lake Volta, the largest man-made lake in the world which covers about 3.6% of Ghana's total land area

KROBO BEADS. drive to somanya to visit a bead factory and colorful African beads. Drive back to juapong and continue the journey to Ada through Sogakope.

VUME POTTERY. Make a stop at vume to have a hand -on experience of pottery making.

Continue to Ada which is made up of over 20 islands to see where the volta lake kisses the see.

DAY10: ADA

SCULPTURE MUSEUM. After breakfast, take a trip to Hwakpo, a community in Ada to visit the nkyikyim ancestral sculpture museum,

SONGOR SALT LAGOON. Drive to songor lagoon UNESCO biosphere reserve where salt is mined locally by women cooperative and see the Maggie monument.

Drive back to ada foah to do agro-tour through the beachfront vegetable farms.

End the day with a community walk.

In the evening, sit and listen to local fairy tail around a bonfire and enjoy local drumming.

DAY 11:  ADA - ACCRA

Use the banana local boat to cruise on the world's biggest man-made lake - the Volta lake and meet some island communities folks and interact with them. Visit the local sugar-cane Rhum distillery and the artisanal coconut oil processing by island women.

-Swim at the estuary where the lake and the Atlantic ocean meet and give a well-blended water mix and relax at the Maranatha Beach
